In order to truly ‘follow the child,’ one must first have faith in the child and the child’s natural desire to learn.”
Students are introduced to the rules of human communication through word studies, work with the Montessori Grammar Boxes, as well as logical sentence analysis. The goal in the Montessori elementary Language curriculum is not to teach grammar but to give a concrete representation and foster a love of the function of words.
As students start to read and write sentences, they are introduced to the mechanics of punctuation, capitalization, where to place sentences on the page, and how to construct well-written paragraphs. They systematically develop their reading, comprehension, and creative writing skills.
Arithmetic and Geometry
It is now that children are able to use their imagination to see beyond the immediate. They are able to see beyond the concrete representations and imagine higher place values within the decimal system.
The inquisitiveness of the elementary Montessori child is astounding. The beauty of the advanced squaring and cubing materials invite the children to explore and learn with them. They dive into the study of fractions and decimals, eager to move beyond, in order to explore more complex mathematics, geometry, and algebra.
History & Geography
“The story of the past can be just a boring account of events. It must not be given this way. It must be given like a fairy tale.”
Children acquire a vast base of knowledge about the world, from its geographic features to the way different cultures throughout the world through the ages have satisfied their basic needs.
They understand interdependency with each other and develop a gratitude towards our ancestors who have helped make the world greater and richer for our living.
Biology
Children are natural observers and are fascinated by the natural world.
Children now have the ability to focus on in-depth research. They are able to actively engage with what interests them by conducting experiments, interpreting data, and presenting their results.
